A typical braking system is made up of the rotor, the caliper, brake pads or shoes and brake lines. When you press the brake pedal, pressure is applied to the disc or rotor by brake pads on each side, to slow your vehicle or bring it to a stop. Brake problems often start out small, but can become increasingly larger and more costly. Periodic inspections help you plan for brake repairs and spread out your cost, however they should be examined at least once every year. After a thorough inspection, CJ’s ASE-certified technicians will make brake repair suggestions based on wear, driving habits and your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.

If your brake pads wear and are not switched out, you may need to replace the rotors too. Replacing brake pads or shoes is less expensive than replacing damaged rotors or drums. Brake Inspection and Repair

There are many signs that your brake system needs to be evaluated. Some symptoms may include: a grinding or squealing noise while braking; the steering wheel shaking while braking; the brake pedal travels further than normal, needs excess pressure, responds slowly or feels spongy; your vehicle pulls to the left or right while braking; your vehicle requires longer distances to stop than it used to; or your emergency brake does not hold the vehicle anymore.

CJ’s Tire & Automotive mechanics will measure your brake pads/shoes to ensure that they are at an appropriate thickness. They also inspect each disc or rotor for rough spots, warping or damage. Discs should be shiny and show little signs of wear. Discs that are damaged or warped should be resurfaced or replaced immediately.

Our experts will also check your vehicle’s brake lines to see if the rubber lines are still pliable and soft. Brake lines can become corroded, cracked and stiff; if that happens brake fluid can no longer run through them. They also check hard metal brake lines for corrosion and cracking. Replacing brake linings before they become damaged can save key system components and money.
